Langtang Valley Trek
A 10-day teahouse trek north of Kathmandu to Kyanjin Gompa, with two nights to acclimatise and reach both Langtang viewpoints.
The Langtang valley, walked at a pace that lets you arrive well
A drive north of Kathmandu, a steady climb to Kyanjin Gompa, and two nights at altitude so both viewpoints are earned, not rushed.
Trip Highlights
- A real second night at Kyanjin Gompa, so acclimatisation is built in rather than gambled
- Both high viewpoints - Kyanjin Ri at 4,773 m and Tserko Ri at 4,984 m
- No domestic flight: a scenic drive from Kathmandu straight to the trailhead
- Steady, non-technical walking through forest, glacial valley and yak meadow
- Tamang and Tibetan-rooted villages, mani walls and the Kyanjin monastery
- Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa and Ganesh Himal framing the upper valley
- A licensed guide on every departure, as the region now requires
Sleeping altitude stays under 3,900 m, but the viewpoint hikes climb past 4,700 m and back in a single morning. That is roughly a 1,100 m gain in a day. It is why we hold two nights up high rather than one - altitude sickness is possible even on a trek this gentle.
There is no flight. The drive to Syabrubesi is six to nine hours on a winding, sometimes rough road, and monsoon rain can slow or block sections. We use the best transport your tier allows and describe the day honestly rather than hiding it.
Rooms are simple and twin-share, more basic the higher you go. Hot showers, device charging and Wi-Fi cost extra, run on solar or limited supply, and are unreliable above Langtang Village. Bring a power bank and modest expectations for comfort.
Since 2023, foreign trekkers must walk Langtang with a licensed guide, and solo trekking is no longer permitted at the checkpoints. Every LHJ departure includes one. Some competitor pages still say you can go alone - you cannot.

- Tamang Heritage Trail - hot springs and stone villages west of Syabrubesi
- Three to six extra days depending on the option chosen
- The same licensed-guide support carried through the extension
Both extensions add altitude and trail days; the Gosaikunda crossing reaches around 4,600 m at Laurebina. Comfortable completion of the core valley first is recommended, and we add acclimatisation nights if your experience is light.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is a moderate trek with no technical ground - steady walking of five to seven hours a day. The one genuinely hard part is the viewpoint morning, which climbs past 4,700 m and back in a single day. Sleeping altitude stays under 3,900 m, which is why we hold two nights high to take that day well.
You need a licensed guide. Since 2023, foreign trekkers must walk Langtang with one, and solo trekking is no longer permitted at the checkpoints. Some older pages still say you can go alone - that is out of date. Every LHJ departure includes a licensed guide.
They are different, not ranked. Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) is closer, steeper and quicker, with a balcony view over the glacier. Tserko Ri (4,984 m) is higher, longer and wider in outlook. The Journey does both across two days - Kyanjin Ri to acclimatise, Tserko Ri for the high view. The Trail does Kyanjin Ri only.
There is no flight. You drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the trailhead - roughly 117 to 122 km but six to nine hours on a winding, sometimes rough road. Monsoon rain can slow it further. We use a shared vehicle on the Trail and Journey, and a private jeep on the Transformation.
Two - the Langtang National Park entry permit (around NPR 3,000, about USD 25 for foreigners, VAT included; roughly half for SAARC nationals; free for children under 10) and a TIMS card (about USD 10 to 20). We arrange both for you. They are checked at Dhunche, Ghodatabela and other points.
Yes. Langtang Village was destroyed by an avalanche in the 2015 earthquake, with significant loss of life, and has since been rebuilt by the community that returned. The trail and teahouses are fully operational. We pass through with respect for that history rather than treating it as a sight.
This is a teahouse trek, not a lodge trek. Rooms are simple and twin-share, more basic the higher you go. Hot showers, device charging and Wi-Fi cost a few dollars each, run on solar or limited supply, and are unreliable above Langtang Village. Bring a power bank and modest expectations for comfort.
Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are best - stable weather and clear mountain views. Monsoon (June to August) brings leeches, slippery trails and landslide risk on the road. Winter is possible but cold, with some snow on the viewpoint climbs.
Your Journey
Follow the trail from start to finish every day is a new adventure.
The Trail does the valley in seven days with one Kyanjin night and the Kyanjin Ri viewpoint. The Journey adds a second Kyanjin night and the Tserko Ri high point. The Transformation is private, with an assistant guide, private jeep and a weather-permitting helicopter return. Safety holding and pacing are identical across all three.
