Choose Dhaulagiri if you want trails almost no foreign trekker has walked, and you are happy to trade teahouse comfort for simple valley lodges and a few nights in a tent.
Region overview
Why Dhaulagiri?
Dhaulagiri is the quiet side of western Nepal: the broad Dhorpatan valley, one of the country's first Tibetan refugee settlements, and open herders' meadows below the Dhaulagiri range, all inside Nepal's only hunting reserve.
Dhorpatan Trek. Getting in is a long road day from Pokhara on a rough 4WD track, and above the valley there are no lodges outside the summer grazing months.
LHJ plans the road, the reserve permit and the tented camp, and paces the climb so you sleep in the valley before you sleep anywhere higher.
