When to go for clear views, when to go for flowers, and when to avoid the rain. Expert advice.
Nepal has four distinct seasons, and each one offers a very different trekking experience. Choosing the right time can mean the difference between crystal-clear Himalayan views and trekking through clouds for a week.
Peak Season: October – November
This is the golden window. After the monsoon clears, skies are blue, visibility is excellent, and temperatures are comfortable. It's also the busiest time — expect full teahouses on popular routes. Book early.
Spring: March – May
The second-best season. Rhododendrons bloom in spectacular reds and pinks at mid-altitude. Temperatures are warming up but haze can reduce visibility at lower elevations. Late May can see pre-monsoon showers.
Monsoon: June – September
Heavy rainfall makes most treks muddy and leeches abundant. Rain-shadow regions like Upper Mustang and Dolpo are the exception — they stay dry and are best visited now. Fewer trekkers mean lower prices and peaceful trails.
Winter: December – February
Cold but clear at higher altitudes. Lower-altitude treks like Poon Hill, Ghorepani, and the short Annapurna treks are still viable. High passes may be snow-blocked. Tea houses above 4,000m often close.
Our Recommendation
For first-timers: October or early November. For repeat visitors wanting fewer crowds: late March or April. For adventure seekers: monsoon season in Upper Mustang.
