Two iconic treks, very different experiences. We break down difficulty, cost, scenery, and crowd levels.
It's the question we hear more than any other: "Should I do Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit?" Both are world-class treks, but they offer very different experiences. After guiding both routes for over 15 years, here's my honest comparison.
Scenery
The Everest region is raw and dramatic — massive glaciers, towering rock faces, and the unmistakable silhouette of Everest itself. It's a moonscape above 5,000m. The Annapurna Circuit, by contrast, is one of the most diverse treks on Earth. You pass through rice paddies, subtropical forests, arid desert valleys, and high alpine terrain — all in one trek.
Difficulty
EBC reaches a maximum altitude of 5,364m at Base Camp (or 5,545m if you add Kala Patthar). The Annapurna Circuit's highest point is Thorong La Pass at 5,416m. Both are demanding, but EBC involves more sustained high-altitude days. Annapurna has more varied terrain including one very long pass day.
Crowds
The Everest trail is significantly busier, especially in peak season (October–November). You'll share the trail with hundreds of trekkers daily. The Annapurna Circuit, while not empty, spreads trekkers over a much longer route. The Manang side especially can feel wonderfully remote.
Cost
EBC tends to be slightly more expensive — flights to Lukla, higher teahouse prices in the Khumbu, and permit costs. Annapurna is more budget-friendly with lower permit fees and cheaper accommodation.
The Verdict
If you want the iconic Everest experience and don't mind crowds, choose EBC. If you want variety, culture, and a more diverse landscape, choose Annapurna. Either way, you won't be disappointed.
