Escape the city dust and explore ancient temples, hill stations, and hidden valleys just hours away.
Kathmandu is chaotic, noisy, and dusty — but it's also surrounded by some of the most beautiful and culturally rich places in South Asia. If you have a day (or a few) to spare before or after your trek, these five trips are worth every minute.
1. Bhaktapur — The Living Museum
Just 13km east of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur is a perfectly preserved medieval Newari city. The Durbar Square here is less crowded than Kathmandu's and arguably more beautiful. Don't miss the Nyatapola Temple, the tallest pagoda in Nepal, and try the famous juju dhau (king curd yogurt).
2. Nagarkot — Sunrise Over the Himalayas
A 90-minute drive takes you to Nagarkot, a hill station at 2,175m with panoramic views of the Himalayan range — from Dhaulagiri in the west to Everest in the east. Wake up early for sunrise. On a clear day, you can see eight of the world's thirteen highest peaks.
3. Panauti — Off the Tourist Trail
This ancient Newari town is one of the oldest in the valley but receives a fraction of Bhaktapur's visitors. It's at the confluence of two rivers and is filled with intricately carved temples, traditional homes, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels centuries removed from Kathmandu.
4. Pharping — Caves and Monasteries
South of Kathmandu, Pharping is a sacred Buddhist site where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have meditated. Visit the Asura Cave and the nearby Dakshinkali Temple, one of the most important Hindu shrines in Nepal.
5. Chandragiri Hills — Cable Car with a View
Take the cable car up to Chandragiri Hill (2,551m) for stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley below and the Himalayan range above. There's a temple at the top and a small restaurant — perfect for a half-day escape.
